🗓We started using this structure in a middle school Writers Workshop three years ago. Writer’s Block was an epidemic and blank stares were contagious. We eradicated Writer’s Block with this protocol and gained ACTIVE LISTENERS and built respect within our community. Step #3 is crucial: “Who heard something brilliant in their small group that the rest of us need to hear?” Suddenly, the student who came into class feeling clueless and defeated has a waving hand in the air (literal or virtual) and is gaining status for their share and crediting their peer. “Sonja said that she thinks it was a robbery.” 💥Boom! You participated. You listened. Annnnndddd you have an idea when it’s time to write independently. ![]()

🏆BONUS: Try it with a math problem. Just one! Sick of “going over the homework all period while kids’ eyes glaze over? STOP! Give them ONE problem to make sense of using this protocol. Everyone will have a BETTER sense by step 4, then they did walking into class. And THEY are doing the work, not just you! 🤷🏼♀️![]()
