Every year, many of my students struggle to subtract mixed numbers when regrouping is needed. Flipping my instruction around subtracting mixed numbers has made a HUGE difference! Once I have initially launched the concept, students work through problems at their own pace. First, they attempt a problem independently. Next, they click on the problem within a digital worksheet and watch a video. In the video, I whiteboard and explain the problem.
I encourage students to revise their work. They watch and rewatch the video until they feel more confident. There are six problems and videos in all. This process takes students 1-2 class periods. Then I assign a Skills Quick Check. This is a self grading Google Form that gives me great formative assessment data about my students’ skills subtracting mixed numbers. I use this data to plan my intervention groups and differentiate instruction in the coming days. Some students will continue to work on our current skill, while others will move ahead or work on building fact fluency. Check out all of my Guide Me Math Packs.
