How to Teach Long Division So That Their Answers Are Accurate

How to Teach Long Division So That Their Answers Are Accurate

February 16, 2021

Teaching Long Division. I can almost feel the pain just typing the words. I think I have some residual PTSD from erasing a hole through my paper in Ms. Donahue’s fourth grade class in the 80’s. Guessing wrong how many times 37 “go-zin-ta” 566… and not knowing until the end of a traumatic subtraction exercise complete with WAY too much… Read More

How to Teach Multiplying Fractions

How to Teach Multiplying Fractions

April 26, 2020

It took me years to figure out how to teach multiplying fractions so that students could conceptualize a part of a part. I learned that the traditional algorithm had to take a back seat to drawing and color coding models. When teaching this unit, I’ve found that the most important tool for my students- is sharpened colored pencils. We draw… Read More

Subtracting Mixed Numbers with Video Lessons

Subtracting Mixed Numbers with Video Lessons

April 19, 2020

Every year, many of my students struggle to subtract mixed numbers when regrouping is needed. Flipping my instruction around subtracting mixed numbers has made a HUGE difference! Once I have initially launched the concept, students work through problems at their own pace. First, they attempt a problem independently. Next, they click on the problem within a digital worksheet and watch… Read More

Fact Fluency and Number Sense in Sixth Grade

Fact Fluency and Number Sense in Sixth Grade

April 17, 2019

A while back I took stock of what we were doing as a math department to improve kids’ math fluency. It seemed that every year we had a chunk of kids who came up to sixth grade with amazing fact fluency. We had another chunk who fought with basic addition and multiplication much like struggling readers fought with multisyllabic words…. Read More

Teaching Fractions: 3 Keys

Teaching Fractions: 3 Keys

October 23, 2018

If you’re thinking about fractions, you might be a 5th grade teacher… Thanks to the Common Core State Standards, fifth grade now throws the wildest fraction party on the block! I taught 6th grade math back when that was fraction central, and I learned 3 key things along the way. They have been just applicable in the 5th grade classrooms… Read More

Talking About Fractions in Math Class

Talking About Fractions in Math Class

July 31, 2018

“The ones that are doing the talking are doing the learning.” I know that. But, no matter how many times I say it, the impact on student learning in front of me is profound and somehow surprising. There is no example stronger than that of talking about fractions in math class. I’ve spent most of my career spending part of… Read More

Yes!!!! 🎉No more Snapchat in biology. No more TikTok in the lunchroom. Instagram in history class? It’s a thing of the past. The progressive boarding and college preparatory Buxton School has notified faculty and students that, as of the start of the fall 2022 semester, smartphones will not be allowed on campus. At all. Since most of the students live on campus, that is effectively a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week ban on the devices.Smartphones will be banned entirely from the school and not just for the kids — for the adults, too. People will still be able to use “dumb” phones and connect to the Internet on laptops or tablets. Adults have been decrying the risks of phones for at least a decade, while kids have clung to their Insta’s and Snapchats ever more strongly. And schools have yo-yoed back and forth between banning phones and allowing the devices, even, in some cases, encouraging their use for class projects.Buxton’s smartphone ban was a long time coming. Teachers felt that the always-on devices seemed to be discouraging kids from starting creative projects, attending social events, and even just hanging out together. Not many schools have taken such a radical step. For most of the past decade, the trend has been in the opposite direction. Led by New York City in 2015, many school systems have repealed phone bans and allow students to carry the devices in schools. Concerned about smartphone use at your child's school?🔲Talk to your kids about the importance of putting their phones away during the school day. When phones are out during the school day, grades go down and bullying goes up.🔲Limit your kids access to everything on their phone except calls during the school day with Apple's screen time feature, Google Family link or other parental control services and apps.🔲Advocate for a stronger smartphone policy at your child's school with resources from Away for the Day.🔲 Do not text your child during the school day! Teachers say that constant texting between the child and parent at school is a huge problem.
