Talking About Fractions in Math Class

Talking About Fractions in Math Class

July 31, 2018

“The ones that are doing the talking are doing the learning.” I know that. But, no matter how many times I say it, the impact on student learning in front of me is profound and somehow surprising. There is no example stronger than that of talking about fractions in math class. I’ve spent most of my career spending part of… Read More

Fractions and Decimals Made Easy

Fractions and Decimals Made Easy

June 19, 2018

If teaching fifth and sixth graders has taught me anything, it’s that fractions and decimals can be ABSTRACT and TRICKY… and that kids have to be developmentally ready to perform operations on them. The good news is- the standards aren’t encouraging us to get kids to add, subtract, multiply and divide 5/32 and 16/71! We make equivalent fractions as a… Read More

You know that buzz of collaboration and learning that you hope for everyday? It happens when we play this game. Every. Single. Time. If you like Boggle, you’ll love this game. Word Wrangle is a fun classroom word game inspired by my love of Boggle and also my love of quiet. Once upon a time, I bought SIX Boggle games… Read More

Academic Discussions

Current Events. It’s been done to death. And I get that. What I’m going to share with you is not really about current events. The context just happens to be Current Events- but it could be anything… (so insert your own context!) It’s about academic discussions- conversation. Do kids really know what that is these days? Chances are they do… Read More

This 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 in every classroom I've taught in, from grade 3 to high school- and everywhere in between!! ⁣
⁣
For years I printed the game boards on card stock and used them in 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. Every year, kids would beg to take a set home to play with their families- the competition was FIERCE. ⁣
⁣
A few years ago, I walked into a friend's room and she was projecting the game board for everyone to see... 🤦‍♀️ She's obviously a genius! ⁣
⁣
And last spring I sat a my dining room table sharing a game board through cyberspace over a Google Meet to living rooms and kitchens all around town! How would YOU use this game? ⁣
⁣
Easy enough to make using a 5x5 grid! Or save yourself some time and energy and grab 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗪𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗹e in my TPT store. 50 6th graders a year for 10 years have slowly but surely helped me find and remove all the 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀! 🤣😉⁣

This is my mantra when 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.

Sip some tea and give it a whirl yourself, "they'll all get it. Just not on the same day or in the same way." Breathe out.

💪🏻Kids use the cards they need to strengthen conceptual knowledge. Need visuals? Great- there’s a deck of cards for that. Graduating from visuals? Lovely, grab the other deck and challenge yourself!

🧠Comparing the fraction values grows fraction sense. It’s unavoidable.

🗣️Math language is natural and embedded.

♟️Three different games means at home or at school means print once and play all year.

🎲The cards themselves make AMAZING manipulatives to whip out during any fraction activity.

🥽No contact aport. Everyone can have their own set!

Yesterday I finished making dinner a little too la Yesterday I finished making dinner a little too late and my kids were HANGRY. Even though they had “helped” (🤦🏼‍♀️🙄😂) make this favorite dish, there was a lot of whining, some peanut butter toast and maybe someone threatened moving to someplace that only had bananas to eat.. 🤷🏼‍♀️

🌈Tonight however, dinner was ready (AKA reheated) at 4:50, topped with a ketchup smile or Mr. 4 and a corn and carrots smile for Mr. 5, and served with KNIVES!!! 🍽

What a difference a day (and an hour) can make!! No one was getting a knife yesterday 😂

Dinner was lentil shepherds pie with broccoli, corn and the most delicious mashed potatoes on top. The secret is warmed lite coconut milk flavored with garlic and salt. SOOOO creamy and no coconut taste, I promise!

We had @dreenaburton ‘s super quick chocolate chia pudding for dessert and they pretty much licked their bowls clean.

What’s your secret to getting everyone in their happy place for a meal? Knives , the early bird special and smily faces work wonders over here!!

Tag your teacher besties! I know it may FEEL lik Tag your teacher besties!

I know it may FEEL like Thursday, but somehow- it’s only Monday😳

We’ll be fine, since we have such AMAZING teacher friends to lean on!

🌈Whether it’s the teacher down the hall that always leaves you a copy of something awesome on the way back from the copier...

🌈Or your co-teacher, who makes you feel like you two are running a talk show, not a Google Meet when you (virtually) blast in unannounced...

🦄THESE are our people!!! And this job would NOT be as fun without them!!

Have a great week, everyone! Spread some teacher love😘
I love these books even more than I expected. If y I love these books even more than I expected. If you caught my stories when they were delivered a couple of weeks ago, you’ll remember how beautifully the pages are organized.

For each “bold woman” and “exceptional man” featured, there is one page of informational text paired with a portrait on the facing page.

I’ve finally decided how I’ll use these. I’m going to do a jigsaw. I’ll provide the same pages (about one person) to 3 students in a class. This will mean 7-8 different readings will be distributed in class. Students will independently read and annotate their text for:

📓New/interesting vocabulary
😳Surprising/shocking info
✏️Evidence of leadership
💡Talent or Genius
👀Connections to self/ world/history

Students will get into expert groups to discuss their notes. Via Google Meet, breakout groups will get together to discuss the text that they ALL read. They’ll add to their notes!

Jigsaw Time: New breakout groups will form with students who all read different texts. They’ll each share and as a small group they’ll discuss.

Exit Ticket: How was your person’s experience similar to or different from another person in your Jugsaw group? I will share this question before they get into their groups do they know their focus.

Only teachers get it. Only teachers do it all day. Only teachers get it. Only teachers do it all day. (If you are a parent at home- I see you teaching👀)

The level of patience teachers greet their homeroom with at 7:45AM is pretty amazing. Sometimes when I’m in the hall in the morning greeting kids I can feel it. This almost superhuman positive energy ball rolling through the building.

And I think, how can anyone have a bad day here? This place is amazing! And by 2:45... just enough of that energy remains to get those kids onto the right busses, and collapse at desks to prepare for tomorrow.

And I thinks it’s this. This directions thing. It’s a real energy suck. Hey kids, here’s what we’re going to do! I’m so excited about it that I wrote it here on the board too. Let’s read it together. Johnny, will you tell us in your own words what we’ll be doing? Hey, Alice!! Take a look in Google Classroom, can you see where I posted the directions? Great! If you click on them, a voice memo I made will read them to you! Isn’t that great?? Let’s get started.

👋🏻👋🏻

🤦🏼‍♀️And then the hand. Sometimes it’s after everyone’s been “working” for a while. Sometimes it’s right away. It doesn’t matter.

🌈Tag a teacher who gives directions well! ❤️ This isn’t the year we will fix this. 🙄 But we can be kinder to ourselves about it! 🦄
🦄Do you wish you could sit RIGHT next to that s 🦄Do you wish you could sit RIGHT next to that student and walk him through a few division problems?

💡That’s one of the reasons I created Guide Me Math Video Lessons. Some students are ready to zoom forward, while some need to see that problem a few more times.

📝The idea is students work out a problem on their own and then watch the solution strategy video as a way to check their work.

🥳And a whole lot more happens!!
1. Students are exposed to rich vocabulary.
2. Students rewatch the confusing parts until they feel confident... privately!
3. Students stop themselves from practicing solving problems the WRONG way.

👀Go take a look at all the topics in my Write Solutions TPT store. This Partial Quotients Division Guide Me Pack is brand new.

Tired of hearing “Mommmm can I have another snac Tired of hearing “Mommmm can I have another snack???” (Right after you fed them!!!)

My kids eat oatmeal or cold cereal every morning and the secret to the cold cereal filling them up is hidden WAY at the bottom.

Can you guess what it is?

It’s oats! Good old, Old Fashioned Rolled Oats!

My two sweet little, fast growing, bottomless pits stay full the LONGEST after breakfast.

What’s you best quick meal hack to keep your kids full and not begging for snack after snack after snack?!?!

In case you missed it, Dr. Seuss Enterprises is pulling some books they found to be problematic.. Cat in the Hat is safe, but Mulberry Street is out. There’s a lot of mudslinging on social media, “They killed Dr. Seuss...” and (insert political insult here).
