Dittos & Worksheets & Packets, Oh my!!

March 5, 2013

So, your school department actually has a manual for you and it’s full of printables… They were designed by educators and statisticians… and people that must know more about teaching this content than you do… so why aren’t you students engaged? Well, I am writing this post to make sure you don’t “throw out the baby with the bath water!”… Read More

Student Engagement… Strategy #1

Student Engagement… Strategy #1

March 3, 2013

Jigsaw it! Regardless of the subject, brain research tells us we need many rehearsals (+20…yikes!) for new learning to stick! Learners rehearse learning when they are actually engaged in it. And, just to be clear… a worksheet with 20 math problems does not equal 20 rehearsals…( awwww, maaaan!) So, let’s consider the value of a jigsaw!

Improving Questioning & Discussion Techniques- 1 week Challenge

Improving Questioning & Discussion Techniques- 1 week Challenge

February 21, 2013

Let’s think about where we are starting! If you missed the rubrics I posted yesterday, you may want to check them out. Level 1: Questions are rapid-fire,and convergent, with single correct answers. All discussion is between teacher and students; students are not invited to speak directly to one another. -> Level 2: The teacher frames some questions designed to promote student… Read More

Why Beginning Teachers need Leadership Skills

September 4, 2012

One of the most recurring topics of conversation within the groups of beginning teachers I support is teacher assistants. Some of the most common concerns I hear include: “I don’t know what to give Mrs. T.  to do. She is always ready for the next job and I can’t keep up.” “She doesn’t think I should do it this way…… Read More

My Territories

August 21, 2012

I was first introduced to the idea of a writer’s notebook by my tenth grade English teacher, Mrs. Catamaro. I loved that notebook! My notebook helped me see who I was as a writer, and focus on the writer I wanted to become. It met my needs as a learner the way nothing before had. I was impulsive and unfocused,… Read More

I’ve observed first hand the link between dyslexia, rhythm and elapsed time for years in my house. Lucky for me, my village Includes experienced educators and dyslexia specialists. On my best days- seeing the connection so clearly gave me confidence in the treatment and interventions I was seeking. For the past month, my house has been FULL of song. The kid who never recited a nursery rhyme, won’t sing Happy Birthday, and often asks for the radio to be shut off if someone is singing along… has had a song stuck in his head. And while I’m kind of sick of “The 50 States the Rhyme” in general, I could not be more THRILLED about this milestone. I have so much hope and optimism today, and gratitude for the teachers who have gotten us here. When the road ahead seems like an insurmountable mountain, it’s the individual trees and markers along the way that are worth celebrating and keep you focused. Waking up 45 minutes before my alarm to another soulful rendition of the 50 states was like pausing for a picnic along the path. I’m grateful to be present for it. ... See MoreSee Less

PSA: I forgot this tonight, and we paid dearly. Sharing so maybe you won’t have to do the same.🪩We don’t have to do all the events. I don’t have to spend an hour in a loud overstimulating gymnasium because “they” say it’s fun for kids. I know it’s not fun for me. And the universe smacks me in the back of the head when we get home every time- by way of a major kid meltdown. 🌈My kids will make great childhood memories even if we skip the family dance or glow-in-the-dark bowling night. I had an AMAZING childhood and barely remember any of those types of things. I DO remember quiet times at home with my family. My core memories have nothing to do with big, organized events. 👇🏼What’s something that you think should be good for kids that just doesn’t work for your family??#goodinsideparenting #knowingyourkids #boundries #neurodivergentfamily #asdkids #ndaffirming #familytime #raisingkids #teachermom #adhdkids #teachermomlife #schooldance ...
